The Periodic Table of DevOps Tools V4 Category Highlight: Serverless/PaaS + Cloud

Coming this summer, version 4 of the Periodic Table of DevOps Tools will have a new and improved look, tools all based on input from the DevOps community (you!!!), and new categories. Cloud and Serverless/PaaS naturally fit together as today’s category pair highlight!

Cloud

In Version 3 of the Table, the Cloud category consisted of both the major public cloud providers as well as some of their most commonly used services. Since the number of services has grown at such a rapid rate, we have decided to break this up into two categories. The Cloud category has now been simplified and will now consist of all major public cloud providers (Cloud Computing Service Provider Companies) who provide computing services over the public internet, making them available to anyone who wants to use or purchase them. They may be free or sold on-demand, allowing customers to pay only per usage for the CPU cycles, storage, or bandwidth they consume. For the most part, the cloud provider will maintain the shared infrastructure and provide all types of computing services, including virtual machines, containers, network, storage, database, edge computing, and many more.

Serverless/PaaS

Serverless platforms, often provided by cloud providers, and PaaS fundamentally exist to enable developers to spend more time writing code, rather than manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure including network, servers, operating systems, or storage. For organizations adopting these new services, there can be some significant advantages such as lower cost and ease of deployment since there is no infrastructure to setup or configure, and built-in scalability to allow your applications to grow based on usage. As with Cloud, you only pay for the services you use.
