XL Release 6.2: A Better Experience for Release Managers

| March 30, 2017 | 0 Comments

XL Release is a great help to teams in planning and tracking the progress of their software releases. With XL Release, teams can check whether all criteria have been met to move changes through the pipeline all the way to production. As our product grows, we want to make sure XL Release is a powerful source of information about possible risks in the software delivery process. We also want to help teams to avoid roadblocks on the release path.

When looking to produce a successful release, there are 3 main points that help Release Managers stay on track:

  • Fast identification of possible risks and bottlenecks.
  • Available resources to complete their tasks at the time of the release.
  • Easy access to a complete overview of release pipelines to identify the progress of all releases in the pipeline.

This week we introduced a host of new features in XL Release version 6.2 to improve overall user experience. Let’s have a look in more detail!

Enhanced Release Overview Screen

The new Release Overview screen introduces features that help you quickly identify problems, better track progress of a release and find needed releases faster.

Integrated Risk Score

XL Release now provides a unique view that lets you sort your releases based on a calculated release risk score. To assign a risk score, XL Release performs following checks:

  • Are there are any flags assigned to a release?
  • How severe are the flags?
  • Are there any flags on the release itself?
  • Are any tasks failing or have any already failed?
  • Is a currently running task being delayed due to lack of attention?
  • Is a release meeting its due date?

A specially developed engine automatically checks release data and assigns risk status to each release. Currently 3 risk stages are available:

  • “At risk” – Urgent matter. Release is failed or failing and needs quick action.
  • “Attention needed” – A check is needed. Something is about to go wrong.
  • “On track” – You are doing well. Release is on schedule.

XL Release 6.2 Integrated Risk Score

Release Managers can sort all releases so that riskiest ones appear at the top, ensuring they’ll never miss an item that needs attention. For a quick glance at the situation, simply hover over a risk indicator and a release status summary will pop up. (Learn more about about Risk Intelligence in XL Release 6.2.)

Embedded Pipeline Overview

To support the need for faster access to release pipelines, we are introducing an embedded pipeline into the new Release Overview screen. This helps Release Managers quickly check how far they have moved along the release pipeline. They simply unfold the section below the release of interest. XL Release will provide an indication of the current status, and show what is already completed and what is next on the schedule. This new pipeline overview is also available for completed and archived releases.

Instantly See the Progress of Your Release

A great addition to the new Release Overview screen is a release progress indicator, which appears for each release. You can now easily understand how far you are in your release process.

Find Your Release Faster!

XL Release 6.2 also boosts user experience by providing enhanced filters. These are accessible from the Release Overview screen. Change sorting order based on dates or risk status, view only flagged releases, search on multiple tags–all these features help you find releases faster.
